The “E” on the badge of the new Mercedes-Benz
E-Class Coupe is laden with symbolic significance. It stands for elegance and efficiency, but also for emotion and experience. The new E-Class Coupe follows in the tire tracks of its predecessors, yet at the same time represents a new, updated example of the breed.
The seeds of this accomplishment are shown by the strong genes of the new E-Class Sedan, which has established itself as a trendsetter in the executive segment with its advanced technology ranging from the standard-fitted drowsiness warning system to the Pre-Safe automatic emergency braking system. However, it is primarily the allure of design that sparks the passion for a Mercedes-Benz coupe. The smooth, sweeping hood, taut roof line and expressive headlamps shape the face of the car from the outside, an exterior that exudes both sportiness and elegance.
All coupes from the E-Class range and its predecessors built since 1968 have featured a large glass opening. Look the new Coupe in the headlamps and you will find further evidence of its family links with the Sedan. The engineers selected the crème de la crème of technology in the shape of the Intelligent Light System and Adaptive Main Beam Assist.
Mercedes-Benz offers a range of five engines for the E-Class Coupe. These include a pair of new 4-cylinder units with direct injection, two V6 options with diesel and gasoline direct injection respectively, and the brawny 8-cylinder powerplant in the range-topping
E 500. Output stretches from 150 kW/204 hp to
285 kW/388 hp, while fuel consumption is as much
as 17 percent lower than the new models’ respective predecessors at between 5.1 and 10.9 liters per
100 km (46 – 22 mpg).
The new 4-cylinder diesel engine demonstrates
the advances made under the hood. Developing
150 kW/204 hp and 500 Nm of torque from its 2.2-liter displacement, this unit boasts a 36 percent increase in output over the previous CDI and 47 percent greater torque. Yet it burns only 5.1 liters of fuel per 100 km (46 mpg) and limits CO2 emissions to 135 g/km.
The 4 and 6-cylinder variants of the E-Class carry the
